How to Survive the Polar Night

The polar night is a period that occurs in regions above the Arctic Circle when the Sun does not rise above the horizon during the day. This happens because of the tilt of the Earth's axis – in winter, this part of the Earth is tilted away from the Sun. However, this does not mean that it is completely dark all day long. In reality, there are several hours of twilight or dim daylight, especially around midday. The Sun is never visible in the sky, but total darkness lasts only part of the day.

We experienced the polar night in Norway, and we can say that it is a real challenge for both the body and the mind. We often felt more tired and confused about what time it actually was. Getting out of bed in the morning was very difficult. In the afternoon, we often had the feeling that it was already evening and that our bodies were ready to sleep, only to realize that it was just two o'clock in the afternoon and time for lunch. Without natural daylight, your internal clock can easily get out of sync.

To survive this period more easily, it helps to follow a few simple rules:

  • Keep a daily routine – even on days off, it is important not to sleep through the whole day. Setting an alarm clock and having some kind of daily structure makes a big difference.

  • Stay active – physical activity is essential. Going to the gym, swimming, walking, or doing any kind of sport helps both physically and mentally.

  • Take vitamin D – during winter there is a lack of it, so it is important to supplement it, eat plenty of fish, or take fish oil.

  • Use artificial light – strong lamps or light therapy can partially replace natural daylight.

  • Stay connected with people – meeting friends and sharing activities helps prevent feelings of isolation.

  • Create a cozy atmosphere – make your home comfortable, enjoy warm drinks, and do things that bring you joy.

  • Enjoy the Northern Lights – the polar night offers a unique chance to see the Northern Lights. Waiting for them and watching this natural phenomenon adds a magical dimension to this period and can be a great mental boost and motivation to go outside, even when it's dark and cold.

The polar night is not easy, but with the right mindset and self-care, it can be managed—and you may even find a special kind of beauty in it.
